The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
