Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
